Program Director, KUMD Radio Station

KUMD Radio Station at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) seeks a full-time program director beginning on or about June 1, 2008.  The position is responsible for all station programming; the recruiting, training, scheduling and supervision of student/volunteer programming staff; and will teach one class in broadcast news per year.  This director will be an integral part of an innovative collaboration between KUMD radio station and the College of Liberal Arts to allow the college's journalism program to offer hands-on studio and industry courses at the station.  A master's degree is required with a bachelor's degree in broadcast communications, journalism or a related field.  We offer a competitive salary and excellent benefits package.

• Proofreads all text in assigned projects
• Digitizes and uploads video clips to accompany stories

• Perform other related duties as assigned or needed

 Qualifications:

• High School Diploma or equivalent, B.A. in Journalism or Communication preferred
• Previous editing skills strongly preferred
• Working knowledge of Windows PC
• Familiarity in MS Word and Outlook preferred
• Experience using various Videotape Recorders
• Experience in non-linear editing. Additional experience in audio mixing, graphic design and animation is helpful.
• Must work well under stress
• Must work well with others
• Must be punctual
• Must maintain a professional demeanor when interacting with employees
• Valid Idaho Driver's License, proof of insurance and a clean driving report from the Idaho DMV
• Must be able to work nights and weekends as needed

• Training of Sales Dept personnel in WideOrbit

·         Manage traffic department budget and overtime charges

·         Communicate with sales management regarding inventory status, department issues,  programming updates and attend regular sales pricing meetings

·         Input program orders/create commercial formats in and around; manipulate commercial inventory and codes to reflect changes

·         Processing of special program reformatting requests from News, Sales, Creative Services and Programming

·         Oversee daily log production/log reconciliation

·         Daily review and balancing of commercial inventory report

·         Create promotional opportunities with log during sweeps with sales manager approval

·         Implement Children's Programming limitations within all programming

·         On call 24hrs to MCR for traffic inquiries

• Perform other duties as assigned or needed

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree preferred
• Minimum of two years TV traffic experience, handling all types of traffic related issues, as well as a thorough knowledge of all traffic positions
• Prior traffic manager experience preferred, supervisory experience needed

• Familiarity with current marketing and sales techniques
• Must have a complete understanding of program formatting and scheduling
• Skilled in inventory man Working knowledge of Windows PC
• Experience with traffic software system, preferable WideOrbit
• Familiarity with word processing software; Word preferred
• Familiarity with Microsoft Outlook
• Needs managerial, organizational and strong oral and written communication skills
• Must be self motivated, work well under pressure and easily adapt to constantly changing events
• Must be able to prioritize work and manage heavy workloads

American Journalism Review

Due to the various deadlines, the "home" web page will be listed for many of the organizations offering awards, scholarships and internships. Hearst Journalism Awards - There are six writing, three photojournalism, two radio broadcast news and two television broadcast news competitions each academic year, beginning in October and ending in April. The monthly competitions honor the top ten winners with awards ranging from $500 to $2,000, with the schools receiving matching grants. The competition year culminates in June with the National Writing, Photojournalism and Broadcast News Championships, and is open to selected winning students from the monthly competitions who also receive additional awards.

BMI is sponsoring the FastStart To Radio Success Minority Scholarship Program for the third year by providing 25 minority students full tuition scholorships to the Radio Advertsing Bureau's Radio Training Academy in Dallas. Applications may be submitted online at www.rab.com. The application deadline is April 30th, and recipients will be announced at the end of May.

SAJA Scholarships
SAJA, the South Asian Journalists Association, offers three sets of scholarships for promising high school, college and graduate students of South Asian origin (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, etc.) interested in journalism careers.

The Emma L. Bowen Foundation
The Emma L. Bowen Foundation was established by the media industry to help increase access to permanent job opportunities for minority students. EBF students work for a partner company during summers and school breaks from the end of their junior year in high school until they graduate from college. During that five-year period, students have an opportunity to learn many aspects of corporate operations and develop company-specific skills. Students in the program receive an hourly wage, as well as matching compensation to help pay for college tuition and expenses. Mentoring from selected staff in the sponsoring company is also a key element of the program.

The Bayliss Radio Scholarship
Juniors, seniors and graduate level students majoring in Broadcast Communications who have maintained a 3.0 GPA or better are encouraged to apply. Although financial need is a consideration, students of merit with an extensive history of radio-related activities are given preference. Applicants provide transcripts, three letters of recommendation evaluating their scholastic and personal strengths and a descriptive page outlining his or her future broadcasting goals. Awards are announced in the summer and applied toward the fall semester.

Investigative Reporters and Editors Inc.
Student Award Award for Investigative Reporting--Honors outstanding investigative reporting by a student in a college-affiliated newspaper, magazine or specialty publication, or broadcast work that has been publicly reviewed, screened or aired. Entry form available on web site. Student award: An IRE Certificate of Recognition and a $250 cash scholarship for outstanding investigative reporting.

National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Chapter 18th MIDSOUTH REGIONAL EMMY AWARDS

Kansas Student Broadcast Awards High School, Undergraduate and Graduate students may enter, so long as he/she is enrolled full-time in any Kansas college, university or high school.

BEA Scholarships Numerous Scholarships, but the award must attend a school with at least one BEA member.

The Communicator Awards Various categories in both video and audio. Fee for entry.
